Happy Birthday, Elaine!

Rollercoasters

There were a bunch and the kids rode them all! Their favorite was the wood one called “Twister”. It’s hard to get photos…

The Hamster Wheel

The girls were in control of the spin. They had to use momentum to get themselves upside down! Ethan sat this one out.

Fun with cousins!

The Flying Ships

Sam got the controls (just a rudder) and flew the ship. It was really more about physics than flying, but they had fun! It was hard to see the kids as they flew around- Sam an Alix in one ship and Ethan behind them.

The Carousel

It had rings to grab but nowhere to throw them until the end. The kids had fun regardless!

Having fun is hard work!

And required a nap!

Train Ride

Kingston likes the train! He even got Grandma to ride too!

Kingston’s 2nd Birthday at Knoebels

A fun amusement park in the PA mountains. The drive north was beautiful and the park was lovely. There were creeks and trees and incredible flowers. Kingston was not so sure about the rides at first but had fun once they got going.

Breakfast at the Kitchen

A favorite spot. Chocolate bar pancakes with strawberries and sauce.

Fireflies

We arrived at Elaine and Ed’s in the evening and as soon as it got dark they went out to catch fireflies. We don’t have them at home- too high and dry. Hard to capture on camera, but fun to watch!

Welcome to Pennsylvania!

It was a short stay in WV (15 miles).

Welcome to West Virginia!

Making tracks…

Welcome to Ohio!

Ohio is serious about their welcome!

Purdue, Indianapolis

A joint campus with Indiana University, it’s only been here for a year. They are building like crazy and by the time Alix would get here they will have a much bigger presence. Even though it’s adjacent to downtown Indianapolis it had a pretty campus with a nice open quad surrounded by classroom buildings. There is a large engineering and technology presence so Alix would be right at home!

Gelato

It would not be a Maule Family Adventure without an ice cream stop. This was a cute little cafe along the canal that runs through downtown Indianapolis. It’s a lovely spot with Venetian gondolas and swan paddle boats!

Carts are hard to drive!

Hopefully the race cars handle better!

Indianapolis Motor Speedway

A slight detour to see the track and Purdue Indianapolis. It’s one of the only motorsports engineering program in the US where they have access to school and racing in one place.

Welcome to Indiana!

Another drive by….

Second Largest Cross in the US

One of the few drive by wacky wild and weird sites on the trip. When I posted about it in 2020 (the last time we did this trip) it was the largest cross in the US. Someone outdid them in the past 5 years. It’s 198 ft high. Not quite 200 so they don’t need a light as required by the FAA.

Welcome to Illinois

Or not… no sign on the bypass road. We opted to leave I-70 for a bit to stay away from downtown St. Louis.

Welcome to Missouri!

It’s not easy to stay on I-70 through Kansas City, but we did it! And I’m sure we have a regular sign photo for Missouri in the archives, but not this one!

Welcome to Kansas!

No sign stops on this trip. Trying to make tracks!

Sadness

According to Jim, the saddest sign on the trip. Though at 95 degrees and 200+ miles past our mountain views we can’t really tell the difference between Colorado and Kansas.

Let the adventure begin…

Not quite the normal packed truck, but this is a quick 3 day trek to get to PA by Tuesday night.
